Organization

During its 72 years, Green Bay Community Theater has produced over 300 plays.   Its home for the past 40years has been the Robert Lee Brault Playhouse, a century-old church, which houses an acoustically perfect 195-seat theater with a 30’ x 24’ open-end stage.   When GBCT is not performing, the facility is rented to local groups and businesses for a variety of functions.

GBCT is governed by a nine-member volunteer Board of Directors who set theater policy.  Creative positions are filled on a show-by-show basis with independent contractors.   Volunteers provide 99% of the labor at the theater.   From actors and crew, to ushers and office workers, the day-to-day operations are dependant upon volunteer energy from the community.

Programming

The core of GBCT programming is the season of four plays.  GBCT provides a variety of theater experiences: Traditional comedies are contrasted with serious drama, musicals and lesser-known classics.   Each production has eleven performances with both matinee and evening performances.

As a community theater, GBCT is also, by definition, an educational theater, committed to life-long learning.  Auditions are open to the general public.  GBCT has the unique advantage of offering performers long runs.  This allows the actors to develop the true craft of acting: performing before a live audience.

A variety of play readings give actors additional opportunities to perfect their skills.  In the technical and administration arenas, community members are encouraged to learn new skills and expand their horizons under the guidance of seasoned professionals.

Community Involvement

GBCT develops partnerships with local businesses, service organizations, schools and individuals:  a program with Arts Administration majors from UW-GB is providing interns with valuable, resume-building experience; work with the Volunteer Center of Brown County is introducing the excitement of arts participation to new constituents, and a partnership with On Broadway, Inc. is generating additional economic activity in the area.

300 individual donors augment a subscription base of over 1,000.  A new donor group, GBCT Entrepreneurs, consists of area businesses that are interested in supporting local arts and culture.  GBCT is expanding its programming and community outreach to serve the growing population of Northeast Wisconsin.  Since its founding 72 years ago, GBCT has truly been a theater of, by, and for the community.
